From the Heart Award

Jan Schakowsky

Jan Schakowsky

Jan Schakowsky was elected to represent Illinois’ 9th Congressional District in 1998, after serving for eight years in the Illinois General Assembly. For decades, Jan identified her top priority as winning affordable, quality health care for all Americans. She has been a champion for Heartland Health Centers’ efforts to provide quality and accessible health care to her uninsured and underinsured constituents. Jan has been a lifelong consumer advocate and a champion for what she sees as the disappearing middle class.  From her days as a young housewife who led the campaign to put expiration dates on food products to the 2008 passage of legislation she helped write making children’s products and toys safe, Jan has worked to make life better for working and middle class Americans.

Larry Suffredin

Larry Suffredin

Larry Suffredin has been Cook County Commissioner for the 13th District since 2002. Larry has been a champion for Heartland Health Centers’ efforts to provide quality and accessible health care to his uninsured and underinsured constituents.  As Commissioner, he has been an advocate for revitalizing the Cook County Health System.  He was instrumental in helping community partners in Rogers Park apply for a federally qualified health center (FQHC) which led to the opening of Heartland Heath Centers Roger Park. He has worked to bring quality health care to those most in need.  He is also a highly successful attorney who has built a reputation as a government relations specialist at the local state, and federal levels, and is known for his broad knowledge of government and politics.

Monica Eng

Monica Eng

Monica Eng is a food and health reporter for WBEZ, Chicago Public Media. Before coming to WBEZ, she worked for 16 years at the Chicago Tribune covering food, culture and health. There she investigated issues of health food access for low income individuals; the unhealthy foods served to at risk children in Chicago Public Schools and the lack of physical education offered by the district.  She continued that coverage at WBEZ where she has also pushed for testing of the water in CPS and at the Chicago Park District for lead.
